Sashiko is a form of functional embroidery, traditionally developed and used in Japan during the Edo period (1603 - 1868) and is still practiced today. It is a type of stitching that is easily recognized by the blue cloth, white thread, and tiny running stitches. It was primarily used to patch clothing and make it even more durable.
These samplers include a navy, 100% cotton piece of fabric that measures 13" x 26." Half the fabric includes the markings for the chosen design which disappears when washed or ironed, so don't do either one before stitching! The extra fabric without the marking can be used as a cushion back or second layer as you stitch your design. Or you can cut off the extra fabric and use it as a patch to practice more stitching. These are a great weekend project.
